We are currently scouting Valladolid, Mexico for a possible trip in 2027 that will focus on fiber arts and ceramics. We are staying in a traditional 18th century hacienda with hand-painted tiled floors, high ceilings, and an oasis of jungle flora in the center. The birds awake early with excited calls and the orange hibiscus in full bloom. We journeyed today to the Uayma to a family carrying on many generations of pottery in traditional Mayan form. @najilkat In the center of the small cluster of homes an impossibly large and ornate church rose from dusty ground, surrounded by small stores containing coca-cola, churros and salty snacks.

We learned about the traditional process of clay creation and then tried our hand using the soft tawny colored clay on shiny leaves to spin and mold. For lunch, we had crispy tortillas with piles of fresh vegetables, glorious in crunch and flavor. Our translator for pottery, an incredible 18 year old, Joel, @esenciauayma took us on a tour of the village and taught us about the history and legend of his beautiful town.

Back in Valladolid we had a dinner of fajitas in a restaurant with a fountain—all the trees illuminated by paper and ceramic lanterns. @healinghandcrafting @heather.josephine
